The stripes were painted (sprayed) using a stencil. Two piece stencil if I recall.
The LT-1 is a decal.
Stripes were black for light colors and white for the dark color cars.
If I recall correctly, during the factory application there was a flaw in the stenciling that created an unequal line on the drivers side (not sure if the pass is the same). When you order replacement striping kits, you will see that you have the option to replace with the same unequal striping as the manufacure provided to remain show quality original or an updated stripe that is equal through and through for your own satisfied look.
In the Oct/Nov issue of CORVETTE NEWS there was a good article about building the new 71. There were some interesting pictures and information about the LT-! stripes. It states that there was only one person on first shift that painted the stripes (Ronnie Hunt), if he wasn't there, the LT-! cars were held, and one of the two people from the second shift that painted stripes, sprayed them.

I believe you can see that the mask was 2 pieces and needed to be aligned
