My 69 coupe (just purchased from someone who did not know too much about this car) has a stock Delco AM-FM radio. That's the good news. The bad news is it does not work. I would rather not switch out the radio even if keeping it means poor audio. Of course, right now nothing is coming through and no audio is much worse than poor audio. Repair/ troubleshoot suggestions?
When I bought my 76 the radio didn't work. I did a little looking around under the dash and found the amplifier wasn't hooked up to the radio. Apparently the former owner had removed an after market stereo and put the original back in and didn't know what he was doing. Once I reconnected the amp everything worked fine or at least as fine as the stock radio can work. I don't know much about your year, but check to be sure it is wired in correctly.
Thank you both for your replies. I checked out Wards and if it is not something (very, very) simple when I look under the dash I will send the radio out to them.
First, check to see that the antenna system is in good order and connected at the radio. Next, verify that you are getting power to the radio and that the speaker wires are not cut. Lastly, remove the right side dash panel; then remove the 'convector' [final amplifier stage for the radio] and unplug it from the radio head. You can easily test the power transistors (one for AM/FM; two for stereo system) with a volt-ohmmeter {search the web for instructions on doing this}. If you have a bad power transistor, replace it and see if it works. If none of that solves your problem, have the head unit checked/repaired as mentioned above.
I know of an ex forum member that has a (I believe) new stock radio for sale. He never installed it, found out...the problem actaully was his speakers. He sold the 73 and is now cleaning out the garage. PM me for info...Muddy
there is, the 69 radio has green lettering, the 73 is white. The ***** are different as well, but interchangeable...and the 69 radio has long leads for the speakers in the kick panels...not sure if 69 has kick panel or dash mounted speakers...
The '68 & '69 C3s had the speakers behind the kickpanels; following years cars had them in the dash (only). Sometime in the later '70s, the speakers in the back were added.
Man, I am embarrassed by how much knowledge you guy's have and how much I don't. Glad to be a member of this forum and will make a donation to help support it. Thanks again to all.
