So I got some brake cleaner...not fluid. on my 40 year old paint...i got it off pretty fast but the damage was done...can I clean it up with wet 2K grit sandpaper? I have some streaks and some discoloration. I hit it with liquid glass polish and that seemed to help some, but I think it needs something a little more abrasive.
I think I'd try rubbing compound or maybe even machine polishing compound first. If that didn't do it, then go with the very finest wet paper and a lot of patience and care.
Going through the paint would be worse than leaving a slight discoloration or blemish.

Go to your local body shop and ask them what to do. You could make it worse if you aren't careful. Having said that, I'd try a mild buffing compound and a buffing wheel and go easy.
The previous owner of my '76 had the car for 27 years and it looked like he never polished it during that whole time. The color is dark brown metallic but it was so oxidized that it looked like hand rubbed bronze (hence my screen name...)
Anyway, I used liquid metal polish. It seemed less harsh than rubbing compound and worked great. The original paint cleaned up quickly and has a pretty nice shine now. I followed up with a good polish and the paint looks much better now.
I did not use a machine of any kind. Hand rub with light pressure did the trick.
thanks...i went and got some buffing compound which got most of it out, but tomorrow I will go the local body shop supply house and see what they recommend.
