How do I know if I have an L-82. I have a 79 and It has the two snorkle air intake.... How do I know for sure if it is one or not?

In '79 the L48 and L82 had two snorkels. Is it the original engine? The VIN code will tell you if it is a L48 or L82. The fifth symbol 4 = L82 8= L48

The VIN code is the definitive answer, but there are some visual clues too. If your engine has the black with silver ribs valve covers, also, an L-82 with A/C will have an auxiliary electric fan in the shroud. Another is a factory GM aluminum intake, L-48's had a cast iron one. All of the above could easily be changed out though.

If it looks pretty much like this, it's an L82.

In all fairness and accuracy the VIN will only tell you what the car came equipped with but will not verify whats in there now. Valve covers and external parts can easily be added.

Your most accurate determinor would be the codes on the engine itself. and unfortunately even that can be spoofed, but rarely so.

If the VIN's fifth digit is a four then it's an L-82, if it's an 8 it's an L-48 in 1979
