Default VIN locations

i will be registering my car soon and it has an out of state title. A police officer friend of mine has agreed to do the title check required by the license branch. He states though that as a classic car he will need to see at least two identification marks to verify it. Obviously the VIN tag will suffice as one...i dont have a tank sticker or any of the factory door stickers still. was the VIN stamped on the frame in certain locations back then? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

there is ony the one vin tag that is easilly accessable.. all else will take either some major cleaning and mirrors to get to the frame stamp or cutting to get to it just to eyeball it... but it is on the frame and under the body and alot of times rusted to the point of being unreadable.
i disagree on the 2 id mark requirement.. that seems unreasonable. I have never heard of that.. perhaps you could talk to someone else at the DMV and get a second opinion..

i brought my car from out of state and a police officer came over and verified the vin on the pillar only... of course I looked honest

I have heard horror stories regarding impounding cars and dissassembling them to verify a vin on questionable cars, but I don't know if they are true..

is your car in any way questionable?

i am assuming your car is a c-3. The door should have a vin number on it and the engine should have number that matches the vin. These may qualify for the second number.

The frame has two numbers, on under the driver door sill and the other above the rear wheel towards the rear of the frame. Both are impossible to look at with the body on the frame.

Default vin numbers

The frame number on the rear of the frame is readable with the body on the car. On two of my 73 the number was on top of the left frame rail about even with the rear tire. I was able to clean the top of the frame with a small wire brush and oily rag and then read the number with a small mirror. My 80 also had a number in the same spot on the frame. I have a 75 frame I am in the process of cleaning up and I have not found any numbers on it so far, and it is a clean rust free frame.

I have always heard that there is a vin number on the frame near the rear of the frame. When you say left side of the frame are you speaking of the drivers side of the frame? I have some tinkering to do to mine tomorrow and may give this a look just to see.

Eddie...drivers side is correct. Just in front of the rear body mount on the top of the frame rail. Usually parallel with the fuel line.
