Last winter I spent from October till March getting my 79 ready for new paint. I didn't do anything except prep for paint. Between brewskies and materials, I had about $3K invested. Of course I had to buy materials to convert my garage into a sutable paint boot, paint guns and borrow my friends air compressor.
As all stated above holds true. If its a 79 and you plan on driving it and having fun, you can always out it back with restoration when its value has a demand for it.

not doing the job myself. what should a shop charge?????
are you going with the square Monza headlights? Think about the L-88 bubble type lights (Le Mans), those Monza lights scream cheap 70's, or I wrecked my car and it was cheaper to fix it with these...
Le Mans stlye look sexy.
Moza style Looks like a leisure suit.
im not going to change color im just making it the way i what it
then it shouldnt matter what color you paint it. you'll never recoup the 8 - 10k, so why not invest in some paint gear, take a few classes and do it yourself. You may just end up with a little sideline business for yourself.
there isn't special "Corvette only" paint. same paint will go on a pinto.
I just did some paint on my car, not the whole car, just the top for a two tone affect and in total have spent around 500, and that was with buying the gun and the buffer/polisher. If you are willing to put in the work you can get a nice paint job cheaply

And there are plenty of great guys here and in the paint section willing to share advice. Go for it.
I know Maaco gets a bad rap, but there are reputable ones around. I did all the prep myself and had Maaco shoot the paint. I have about $1500 into the job. It has been about a year and I'm pleased. Is it perfect? No. But I'm not afraid to drive it and I always get thumbs up.

It's hard to see orange peel at 85 mph!

Besides it's RED! Nobody EVER says anything bad about a red vette!
It's not that hard to do. I have a grand total of $800 in this paint job. It took me one week. I painted it outside on a windy day in November. My advice is to save some money and give it go. .....but hey, it is your car. You go with what makes you comfortable. Good luck with the paint work no matter what you decide.
Did the wind work to your advantage? Looks real good. good job!
No, not really. I just made sure to put enough paint on that I could color sand out all the boo-boo's. The real work happened after the paint dried. (color sand and buff)
