Hello, I just purchased a '79 coupe from my brother-in-law, and Im in the process of getting it road worthy. The passenger side door wont open from the outside, so I have to remove the door panel to repair it.....But, I can seem to find the loop for removing the retaining clip on the window crank handle. I looked through the a Chilton book, and it shows a picture if it 180 degrees out from the handle, No such luck on mine. And to make matters worse, the door panel has carpet on it, making it impossible to push in the panel in to locate it.........Can anyone please help
Just take a large paper clip and bend it 180° at the very end, with some needle noses, aprx 1/8" into a U. insert it from the back of the handle, flat, all the way down, then turn it 90°and pull back, that should catch and remove it.

Nice trick! I use the removal tool, they are cheap but not so easy to find if you don't want to mail order it.
Thanks for the help....Ive been trying to use a 3" 6 penny finnish nail with the tip bent, it was still a little too big. Im thinkin that the ole paper clip trick will work a heap load better..... This was my first day on this site, and you guys already made my life easier.....Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
P.S. By the way, I looked every where for a removal tool.....but alas, I couldn't find one. Hope you guys don't think I'm some kinda "Goober" for using the 6 penny finish nail.... tehe
The removal tool is great, and worked like a charm on my window cranks. Be forewarned, that if a part can be installed backwards, apparently about half of the people will do so. One of mine had the clip installed the way it shows in the book, the other was on backwards.
Although the tool worked perfectly on the window cranks, I couldn't get it to work on the door lock *****. For that I used a stiff paper clip that I bent into a small hook as described above.
Another way is to take about a 1 inch wide strip of cloth / rag, and slide in behind the handle, pull it around the shaft and slide back and forth until it snags the clip and releases it, I have used this in a pinch at the junkyard and it works every time.

That tool works like a charm and glad it worked out for you. I'm surprised you had trouble finding it. Just about every Auto Zone, NAPA etc... has them.
I like the other ideas also.
