Default Posi rearend?

Do C3's have 'Posi' Rearends?
I know that both tires turn, but is it a 'Posi' or is it called something else?
I had someone ask me, and I wasn't sure.

I believe the "optional" Posi-traction differential became a "standard" feature in 1977.

Only about 3000 68s and 69s did not have positraction out of almost 70,000 68 and 69 Corvettes produced. So almost all C3s had posi.

The optioned code and cost for the Posi-traction was listed through '76. Perhaps that was only for someone who wanted to delete that option. What reference do you have for Posi being standard equipment in 1970?

1970-1972 NCRS Technical Information and Judging Guide page 109, "Limited slip or Positraction differential is standard equipment on all vehicles for all three years."

The NCRS guide isn't 100% correct but I think it is the best reference there is.

I believe that the Corvette order sheet had the G81 Posi-traction option on it until 1977; so I'm not sure why NCRS states that it was standard equipment.

Not sure why G81 would still be listed. Black Book shows G81 as optional rear axle ratio for 70, positraction prior to 70. Tank stickers show G81 as positraction and ZQ8 and ZQ9 for economy and performance ratios as applicable. Every 70 tank sticker I have seen lists G81 positraction but the matching window stickers do not list postitraction as an option. Every reference I have seen states that posi came standard with all Corvettes starting in 70.

My Corvette Black Book states right in it that in 70 Positraction became standard. All my other books do not show a standard or open diff available from 70 on up, 69 and previous showed a standard or open axle.

Is there any way you can tell a posi rear end from a non posi one by just looking at the casing?

No. The cases are the same. The internals are different

There is stamped information on the bottom of the casing. There should be a two letter code that will tell the ratio and if posi or not.

Looking at Corvette by the Numbers, it appears that AK and AS were the only two codes in 69 that were not posi.
