Default A/C question/idea

I need to discharge the A/C on my 78SA to remove the compressor to replace the seal that's spewing oil. It's FULL and blows ice cold.
meanwhile....
I need to charge the system in my 78 Pace Car. VERY low.
Is there any reason I can't hook up the hose on my gauges that would normally go to a can of freon to the low pressure port on the 78SA and suck it out directly into the Pace Car?
I hate to loose $80 worth of R12(plus it's illegal!)

Sure, start up the one with freon, put the high side of the one with freon into the lo side of the one without, let it set a while, you will see them equalize out off both high sides with your gauges.....so it's red to the high side of the one with, yellow to the lo side of the one without, blue to high side of the one without....start/run the one without untill the high side comes up and then kill the one with.....

job done much as possible....

Honestly, I would just go 134 on the one without and get over it....

So I run the one I'm discharging, too? Until I get MORE pressure in the one receiving it?
Prefer to keep the R12 since I still have about 9 cans, besides, I'd still be dumping $80 worth!

And if this works, I may be doing it again when I refill the 78SA after the compressor repair. Seems my black79 is slinging a little oil, too

Or you can call someone [with the right equipment] who can discharge each unit and store the Freon; then filter and reuse it. (You just have to make the deal ahead on how much you save by re-using your own fluid.) You'll need someone to evacuate each system after doing the seal repair, anyway.

Worked great!
Decided to go ahead and replace the front seal in the Pace Car's compressor as I felt oil underneath and I needed to vacuum it down anyway.
The transfer of freon from the 78SA to the Pace Car took maybe 10 minutes. Started by pushing it in from the SA, then starting the PC after a few minutes so it started pulling and then shut off the SA. Depressed a schrader valve on the SA and got minimal pressure.
Ended up adding 1/2 can of fresh R12 to top it off.
Filling the Pace Car was never a priority but now I am glad I took care of it. Ready for judging(someday).
Waiting for 2 more compressor seal kits(another thing getting hard to find for our cars)and will do this again between my black79 and the SA.
In the end, the 79 will get fresh R12 after the seal replacement.
Best thing, none wasted.
And no more oil spraying on my hoods.

how did it hold a charge if the seal was leaking?

Don't know, maybe that's why I had to add a bit of fresh R12.
I'm not sure, but I think these oil seals are just for the lubrication. They sure don't seem durable enough to contain a lot of pressure.
