A friend of mine went through Auto Ancestry to search for owner history. Ends up they found everything down to the original selling saleman who is still alive and my friend has spoken to him many times.

Wow, that's great. Any idea what it ended up costing? I think for their $75 quick search (one hour) it would be worth a try.

Hi Gary,
I saw their ad in the latest DRIVELINE. It's the first I've seen it and wondered if they were new, someone with a new name, or just new advertising.
Worth checking out from what Dave posted.

Alan

I think I'll give it a shot. I have found history on my 71' going back only to 1987 (106,000 miles!) so there is still lots more to find. All the title info I got from the various state DMV's had the owers name and address blocked out so a detail report wasn't possible. I'll post here what my initial 75 bucks gets me in case others want to try as well.
Gary,
I would like to try that service also. If it delivers it would be well worth the $75. If you don't mind I will piggyback on your experience as well. Any postings of your results is appreciated.
He was able to track down (and talk to) the previous 2 owners but then hit a dead end. I had numerous emails with the 2nd owner back from me and he had a lot of info on the car while he had it. AA even found the newspaper Ad that was posted in in 87'. It had a phone number but was no longer connected. He got the name of the person that had the number back then but could not find the person and that was the end of the search. Most all the DMV's trash all the records after 10 years so finding info is getting difficult. In total I think I paid him $275 over 6 months. It was interesting especially contacting previous owners. We were able to determine that I was the 6th owner.
