hey I don't mean to threadjack you, but I've got a 75, pass side mirror flew off on the way to a movie last week. the 20 year old girlfriend thought it was hilarious....

anyway, I have the replacement now, but I'm wondering waht the fastest/easiest way to put it on is. Ive gotta take the door panel apart, deal with the window etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'll keep using the search feature, hopefully I can find something.

also, to answer your question; the repalcement mirror I orderd came with a complete template to lay on the door body panel for drilling holes. Mines already done. i can just mail you the template if you want to post or PM me your home address.

thanks!

The spacing for all 68-79 chrome outside mirrors is 1 3/4" center to center. All 68-79's with the chrome mirror came with a nut plate bonded into the drivers side door to screw the mirror too.

No 68-76 Corvettes ever left St. Louis with a passenger side mirror and only 77-79's with the optional painted sport mirrors had a passenger side mirror. 77-79's with the chrome standard mirror only got a driver side mirror. The passenger side chrome mirror was only available as a dealer installed option. As such, there is no nut plate to attach the mirror to in the passenger side door. The right hand chrome mirrors were always attached by well nuts. Well nuts are rubber grommets with a brass thread inside. When a screw is tightened into the well nut, it pulls up tight to the fiberglass, sandwiching it just like a dry wall anchor does. Your well nuts probably dried out and cracked, causing the mirror to take off on you. If the new mirror didn't come with new well nuts and screws, you'll need to order them to mount that right hand mirror.

Well nuts can also be used to mount a drivers side mirror when the nut plate is missing. Luggage racks are installed using well nuts too, but they are larger than the mirror ones.

Well A deer knocked mine right into my lap.Drivers side.
Do you just have the two little holes and thats all?If so you dont have to re-move your door panel. The mirror mounts from the outside.under neath on my 75 there is A big channel all the way across where my mirror hooksto the car .the psss. side was a put on so I just used the kit and the mirror was on loose but on. Ive been fighting A loose condition since I put it on and have tried somethings but it still moves A little.(shakes)Mail me with any questions. this is my 1001 post.

I have to figure out how to get the backing plate for the screws in line with the holes to put the screws in. Can you elabore on where this channel you are talking about is located?

it was lose when I bought the car in june. but the screws tighten on the inside of the panel. I thought I'd have to take it all apart just to tigheten them. Now I'm thinking I have to pay for a new mirror, and still take it apart anyway. yay.

If there is a channel, or some trick access I'll be really stoked! conrgats on the post count.

thanks again

On the Pass side I dont think youll need anything do you have the holes the morror left Put a screw driver down in the hole should not be a bottom for an inch or so where at least on my 75 there seems to be A channel .(my guess to get in the area with a backing plate you would need to make a slit or a hole big enough to fit the backing plate in . the pass side on my add on had a rubber insert on both holes and then you put the black gasket and then the metal mirror holder then tighten it down till tight, do not over tighten as it can crack the fiberglass. With out the back plate you can do all the work with the panel on . If you choose to add some type of backing plate you WILL have to take it off.

There is nothing in side your passenger side door to attach the mirror to. As I said in my previous post, the passenger side mirror mounts with 2 well nuts. The well nuts just push in from the outside and when the screw is tightened down in the well nut, it pulls the nut up tight to hold the bracket tight. There is no need to remove the door panel to install a passenger side mirror.

I actually opened the parts bag and took a look at it. you are right I don't have to gain access to the inside of the door panel, the well nuts insert from the outside.

one oddity though, the rubber well nuts I have now are of a larger diameter than whatever was installed previously, I have to drill out the holes in the fiberglass to a slightly larger diameter.... Hope I can keep the spacing right.

thanks for all you're help.

Did you guy who asked the original question about the hole spacing ever manage to get someone to send him a hole template?

The foreign made ones come with a bracket, gasket, mirror screw and mounting screws for the bracket. The passenger side also comes with the well nuts, the drivers side does not because it doesn't need them.

If you get the US made mirrors (made by Paragon) they come with the mounting kit now too, but they never use to. Some vendors have been known to remove the kits from the mirror to make a little more on the sale.
