Default 71 engine Date code??

I have a 71 big block car and have been looking for a correct date code block. I know it should be a 512 block. My car was built Jan of 71. How for back would the date codes go. I other words, what span of dates would have been installed in my car??

There are odd dates out there that have spans of months but if you are looking to create a date correct nom car, 2-3 weeks is a more common date range

The build date on the trim tag of my 1971 is 5/28/71. Heads and intake were cast on 5/11/71, engine cast 5/17/71 and assembled 5/21/71.

NCRS allows 6 months from casting date to build date, but not more than 2 weeks from casting date to pad assembly date. 6 months is a pretty long time though, usually much tighter than that, preferably 10-12 weeks max.

Are you going to restamp it or just leave it NOM?

I dont know what I am going to do yet just bought the car. It is apart the chassis has been completed the body looks clean but the engine that came with it is a 400 small block that I will not be using. I am pretty new to the vettes.

also, there were strikes in 69 and 70 where different plants were working and other plants were idled, causing inventory backup or stoppage of the line due to lack of parts.. all of this is nebulous and is the basis for the 6 month allowance. research other cars built around your date to determine what the span was for them. There are experts out there that have all this data, but it is not free...
remember when you try to sell, even though NCRS Accepts a 6 month old block in a car... I would not pay any premium for a car that had a 6 month older block in it. So what you are planning ( whether ethical or not) needs to be completely researched and done correctly... even then, most likely it will be detected by an expert.

Maybe I should just put in a new LS2 with a 6 speed. Best of the old best of the new.

yes, but now you are talking about adding all the computer and sensors and the wiring harness and brackets to fit all that.. a serpentine setup and maybe a hydraulic clutch also.. it would be pretty cool though...
