Default Removing paint from rally caps

Probably about half of the black paint in the ribs of my rally wheel center caps has worn off over the years. What's the best way to remove the rest of the paint without damaging the metal? I may repaint them later but for now I'm going to leave them without repainting.

Just get some paint stripper. It shouldn't do anything to the metal. Once stripped, you can re-paint by using a good quality 3/16" wide flat-tipped artist's brush and some Krylon semi-flat paint (just spray some into the can lid and use the brush....masking is the "pits").

The job is easier if you take the hats apart.

Mike... I agree, assuming that you mask and spray the paint on. If you do it by hand, it's easier with the "hat", as you can use it to hold the part steady with the other hand.

Thanks guys

I'll ask my kid's to help. They're good at painting with a steady hand while I'm sure I'd mess it up!

With the brush a bit narrower than the width of the [recessed] area being painted, you can just lay the brush in the 'valley' and draw it down its length. By keeping the brush from actually touching the sides, the paint will just flow out to the right position and be perfectly straight. Works like a charm.

Heres how Ive painted these in the past, spray can, paint the entire area, thin coat let it dry. With a cotton T shirt, your finger stuck in the end of the fabric, take some lacquer thinner and gently, very little pressure wipe the paint off the surrounding areas. The secret is you dont get the fabric sopping wet.Once done it will look like its never been repainted.Send them too me,Ill repaint them for you.

Just want to confirm that the original color is semi flat black? By chance, whats the horn button's color (assuming a black interior of course!)?

I do have a black interior and horn button. What's the connection to the center caps? I figured they all had black paint.

Yes.

The horn button matches the interior color. It's also a semi-flat to reduce interior glare.
