I watched a video on Friday of a perfectly nice ~'90 Chevy short wheelbase pickup that got traded. The guy says almost new tires. They pour that stuff in, lock the motor, forklift to the coolant, drain the fluids, and into the crusher she goes. This is so wrong on several points IMHO.
1-why waste new tires? Surely with as hard as it is to get tires they could at least recycle those? Isn't that more green than into the crusher? Who does this help?
2-That was a perfectly nice vehicle for somebody. The TBI motors are so reliable, why couldn't that truck be used by somebody who can't afford a new one? It is probably better than most "clunkers" that are out there. No rust to be seen when they rolled it around with the forklift. Who does this help?
3-No body parts or drivetrain salvaged-perfectly good 700R4 and rearend gone. I know those trucks don't bring what they did 10 years ago, but perfectly nice spare parts-gone! No effort to segregate metals or anything. Who does this help?
4-If we flood the market with scrap metal-where does it go?-what does that do to the price? $1B at $4500/car is roughly 1/4 million cars. If you average 3500lbs/car you get around 3/4billion lbs of scrap cars that will hit the market in the next 6 months. Who does this help?
WE and our children will be paying for all this "free help" for a long time to come. In more ways than money and taxes. My .02
ONLY the engine has to be disabled at this time. The part about "must be crushed now and nothing got off it" is not true.
And...the c6 is NOT allowed on the program....
"What new vehicles may be acquired under the CARS program?
The CARS Act applies to new vehicles. Thus, used vehicles do not qualify under the program.
The new vehicle must have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of not more than $45,000. That price appears on the window sticker on new vehicles."

That may have changed recently. We have a local dealer advertising on television used cars with the $4500 cash for clunkers rebate. And I know they are used because he is a Ford dealer but the cars he specifically mentions are Impalas and other non-Ford vehicles.

Probably his own incentive. Here in Houston we have dealers matching the $4500.00 rebate, whether your car qualifies or not. If it does, you get $9K in monies!!!

i really think anyone trading in there C4 should trade it in for an C6 lol. if that's even possible
its an good program but some of its practices im sure are stupid to say the least just like when good old bush decided to shred our military's brass instead of selling it to bullet manufactures to make bullets from it. i guess that didnt last to long untill some one in the budget commite said Mr Bush you cant do that.
See item 4. Must be crushed or shredded within 180 days. No, they don't have to crush them now, but they can't stay around very long. Again, that many cars in that short amount of time MAY impact the price of scrap.
The way I read it you can't legally sell any drivetrain parts-engine, transmission, or rear end.
It's just another idiotic goobermint hand out program that has everything to do about re-election, and nothing to do with the economy, pollution, or common sense. Therefore it makes perfect sense to ruin functional cars that others could easily use.

I just got a call from our dealer. They finally got our C4C money from Obama. It took two weeks. We can pick up our car anytime (wouldn't let us take the car until they got the $). Probably will pick it up tomorrow. Bye Bye Durango.

Sounds like a dealer subject to a $15,000 fine to me.......
your supposed to deliver the car then apply for the money...........
not apply, get the money, then release the car.........sounds like you got the run around !!!
Thats as BASSACKWARDS as the OBAMA clan that was put in charge of administering the program !!!

tell the dealer you're looking at something else right now. See what kind of rabbit comes jumping out of his hat

not possible. sticker price exceeds the allowed $45000.

If the mileage is in the range and the price is in the range, the dealer is right. The base Camaro qualifies, but I couldn't find one. Plus, sensibility ruled the day, and I got my kiddo a car with discounts instead. The sticker was no less, but with the discounts it was much less than the Camaro.

Correct. The rule is 6 months. I was answering the post about "must be sent immediately to the crusher."

So you expect the dealer to release a car not knowing if more money was going to be approved?

THATS EXACTLY MY POINT........thats how the program was set up......
you have to pre qulaify, deliver the car, then submit your paperwork then wait FOREVER to get paid , we have hundreds of thousands of the GREAT OBAMA I -O-U $$$$$ out on the street, & have not seen a penny yet !!!

Crazy program, we definitely agree on that!
But my kiddo has a new car, and once again my old grand cherokee gave to this family. I kept it forever because all SUVs felt the same to me when I'd go to drive them, or at least not worth putting out more $ for them, and it saved me so much on insurance to put the kids in that vehicle.
Bought new in Feb 95...213000 miles...this was right before we drove it to the dealer.
very, very, hot !!!..............
uhhh ............. I mean the G-6
lol
Thanks! Today is her 24th bday, so it was her bday present kind of...I also bought her really nice floormats and a battery cable and gave them to her. She loves the floormats but is much less impressed by the battery cable. LOL
I need to go buy her a maglite, too, to keep in it.
Luckily, the car has tire pressure sensors just like my c6, so that is cool.
