Default Sill Plate question

Ok guys. I was going through some of the parts that I have gotten from my buddy for his Corvette. He has a new set of sill plates for a 68-77. From everyone's statement here, the Vette in question is NOT a 77, but a 78 or later. Will the New GM factory sill plates he has for it work, or do I need to get later model sill plates?

You need to clear up the question on what year the car IS, and go from THAT point.

I'm not sure, but I think they'll work. IIRC, the earlier ones are aluminum, and the later ones plastic?

The 78-up plate is much narrower than the earlier one. You cannot interchange them.

All I know is that the vin and title says 77, but the rear window is 78 or later. There is another thread I started on this titled "rear window difference" These are pretty wide and made of aluminum.

Preston,

Your theory about the VIN plate being switched, probably to a complete '79 makes the most sense. It would be the simplest explanation.

I have a set of those taped up and didn't know what the heck they were. I guess I will clean them up and re-install them. Thanks for that 78VetteChic!

I will have to get an inspection mirror and see if I can find the VIN on the frame. Any clue as to where it is on the 78-82 Vettes?

I'm wondering, what would you do if you discovered the vin had been switched?

Call the police immediately?

Sell the car, knowing the vin had been switched and risk being procecuted for the switch yourself?

Find the previous owner and demand your money back?

Or just continue to drive the car and pretend nothing is wrong?

Not my car, so I will leave that decision up to him! I think I would drive it because I have already fallen in love with it and would probably never sell it.......
