what does the shift lock do? It was disconnected on my 74... I have started it and put it in gear w/o issue.

It locks the key so that it can't be removed unless the car is in reverse with a 4-speed or park with an automatic. The lever that is moved by the cable is on the steering column right next to the firewall in the engine compartment. If the lever is in the up position, the key is free move to the stop/lock position and come out of the ignition.

Default cable

Okay, thanks. I'll have to look at mine and see what's up. Personally, I like it the way it is.

It was an early anti-theft device. It kept thieves from putting the transmission in gear without the key to unlock the column.
