Default Carrier needed, shipping hardtop...

Help! I purchased a removable hardtop in Detroit and thought Greyhound Bus lines would be able to ship it to Kansas City for me. The seller took it to the local terminal in Detroit and was turned away because it measured too big for the size limit.

Does anyone know of another carrier to ship this? It is too large for UPS and I'm very cautious of using an LTL carrier. Help!

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

My experience, and I am in the shippping business has been good with LTL carriers. My first question to you is, will the seller crate it up properly. Hardtops have areas susceptible to damage in transit. The top needs to be padded and supported properly for a good ride. The back area by the tips should be padded well.
Depending on the destination, I've used Con-Way and USF Holland. Also, make sure the seller descrbes the top properly for the Bill of Lading you don't want to pay too much for the wrong NMFC. The carrier will help you with this.
Good Luck

Dewey-

Thanks for the reply. I worked for Yellow Freight after school for 10 years, that is one reason why I'm cautious about LTL; costs, packing and seeing the top under other freight!

Yes, the shipper is willing to work with me on crating/packaging.

Are you familiar with Fed Ex moving larger items?

Thanks!

The top is too large for a small parcel carrier, you will need to move this LTL. If you're talking about Fed Ex freight, like I said before, with proper care and packaging, it will arrive in fine shape. Any questions or concerns send me a PM.

Why don't you post here and in Parts For Sale a notice asking fellow CF members if they could pick it up and pass it on until it gets to you?

I am a sales rep for a pottery company out of GA, but my territory is OH, IN, KY and sw IL. I have moved stuff before in the company cargo van.
I can meet someone in Cleveland and get it to the Illinois side of St Louis on my next trip in Sept.

Think about it. Depends on how soon you need it and how much you want to spend.

Peace

I recently bought some wheels and tires online with a "local pickup only" clause. I searched around and even asked for bids on uship.com. The outfit with the best price and service was Navis Pack & Ship. I dealt with their Dallas office, but they were terriffic! Check out Navis Pack & Ship online and ask for a quote.

Bman- thats too cool! If I could get someone to bring the top from Detroit to Cleveland, then you could get it to St. Louis! Think it could be done?

Mn80Vett- I put a request for a quote from Navis, thanks for the lead. I'll keep you posted. ( just finishing up an '80 for my son to drive!)

I was really surprised when Greyhound turned it down. I figured it was the only way to go. I got a fully boxed hood from PA several years ago, it had to be close to the size limit, for only $80!

I got a nice deal on the hardtop and don't want to have as much in the shipping too!

I gave member "Wacked" a windshield during the Christmas giveaway and asked for members help getting it from Syracuse NY to Western Ohio. The amount of guys that were willing to help blew me away.
It turned out I drove 2-2-1/2 hours to deliver it to a member that wanted to meet Wacked and he took it from there.
My point is that it can be done although maybe August is a little early for the Christmas spirit.

I've also used uship.com and everything turned out well.

PM me, when you have it figured which way works best for you.
I will be in my territory a lot over the next couple of months as this is prime selling season for pre-order for our company.

Cleveland to East St Louis is no problem. (as long as it wll fit in the back of a cargo van with an 8' floor space)

Let me know.
Peace

I like RL Gator. They are who I specifically use for TX stuff. I have had good service. A little be more than most of the other guys, but I'll pay more for service.

I have exchanged PMs with Stung.
If anyone else can help in Sept let him know.
We need someone to hold it in Cleveland until I can pick it up and someone to hold it somewhere in sw Illinois or East St Louis until the next person can move it on.

LET'S MAKE THIS HAPPEN FOR A FELLOW CF MEMBER!

Peace

All-

Thank you very much for the suggestions, and, Bman for stepping up to the plate and volunteering your time and efforts on my part!

79L48 actually volunteered to handle the first leg from Detroit to Cleveland. I think it really would have worked!

Long story short, to make things as easy on my seller as possible, Dayton Freight will be bringing the top to Kansas City this week. I am sitting on the edge of my seat in fear of some type of damage!

I'll keep you posted!

Hey Jim,

Txs for the news but keep us updated if anything changes.
The offer still stands.
And that goes for any other CF member that needs a hand moving a big item in the Midwest. If I can help I will. Just remember it is a company van so I have limited control over schedule.
But it is nice to see fellow CF members willing to help others with no return expected.

Peace
Bman
