'77 control knob question??

'77 control **** question??
I know this is a dumb question coming from a 62 YO who is driving his 10th Corvette (3rd '77). I have a L/R push/pull black ***** on lower dash down near the A/C vent. Is this for fresh intake air? I've had both "in" and "out" mode and can't tell any difference. Right now I have one pushed in and one pulled out so if they are functioning, I got something going...Or, not going...

The ***** on the dash pad only control a door behind the vent ball. This door will either close or open depending on the **** position. If you have AC this will shut off the AC air from coming out the dash pad. If you don't have ac this will shut off the fresh air from coming out the dash pad.
I'll bet you have AC and you are just cutting off the air flow from the dash....
