Well if it's in good shape, and a bumper car, then jump. I had an 84, not far off what you have so I can tell you you'll be giving up; a more comfortable ride, more creature comforts, and more room...but you'll love those front fenders flanking your view going down the road and being able to pop the back window out along with the top but you better be ready for a bit of a lifestyle change because those cars have very little room. Of course that's the idea you, you're lady and a small bag for a weekend trip or sometimes with me it's me, my dog and my lady following in the SUV only took her about an hour in a Vette to say "you can have it, I like all the creature comforts! Oh well, my dog loves it!
Asking people (c3 forum members) if you should trade your C4 for a C3......you must be looking for positive reinforcement, most of these C3 owners treat the C4 like it,s their outcast relative that married into the family..Ask this question on the C4 forum..you will get the same response ,only reversed!!! it ,s your car do what you want everyone will have an opinion ...do what makes you happy!!!!! I got rid of my 69 Firebird and built my Vette ,believe me everyone has had something to say but at the end of the day ,i really like my decision!!!!Oh and it helps that my WIFE likes the vette!!!
You have a very nice looking C4 and you should be able to find someone with a '78-81 car who will trade with you. If your car is mechanically sound, its value would be in the $8000 range (give or take). A late-model C3 in decent condition would be valued in the same range. You will be losing vehicle reliability, fuel economy, and a lot of performance going to that vintage of C3; but you will be getting a Corvette with much better styling (in the opinion of another C3 owner ).
You're not crazy. Many get to the point where they are looking for a different driving experience.
However, in your case, I believe you will need to be a little more flexible. It's gonna be tough to find a C3 owner who feels his car is worth exactly what your car is worth, plus be willing to trade. Either he or you will need to make up the agreed difference w ca$h.
Since I started I have had 18 responses for a trade. Only two cars so far were even closely equal to my C4. Most had some type of body damage ( from small hole to full fender) and or rotten bushings, many with severe paint issues. Only 5 had interiors that were presentable.
SO there are a number of C3 owners who would trade but call me a dreamer, many were not as well kept as mine. I pride myself in keeping my car clean and working. The engine bay itself is spotless.
I guess I will keep looking until I find the right car.
As far as model loyalty, I like all models, each has something the others don't. Don't get me wrong, I love my C4. It has never left me stranded. Anyone who has driven one knows really how good these cars are. I just don't get why some owners had to treat others with ridicule.
I have owned 7 Corvettes in the last 28 years. I have experienced one C-2, five C-3’s and one C-4. I have held more C-3's to include steel and rubber bumpers. I am partial to the 78 to 82. Making a trade is very possible either as C-3 for C-4 or reversed. I find the C-4 from 91 to 96 to be the most refined and my preference. It's all in your preference regardless of values.
You have a nice car; don’t let anyone convince you it has no value compared to a C-3 that would depend on who with a C-3 is willing to make a trade.
I have bought, sold and traded more than 50 autos in my life; I think it can be done and I think you can make it an even trade.
I would trade my "driver" 86 for a "driver" c3 any day, any way, I just dig the sharks better,
With that said, the c4 is better handling and more refined...to a degree.
Why would someone want to trade a well performing C4 for a slug of a C3?
I'd have to second that emotion.... LOL It would obviously depend on WHICH C3 someone offered to trade me. I saw a 69 L88 go for over $300K on Mecum last night... so a big YES on that one :-) In my opinion, most of the C3s that are valuable now wouldn't make a good daily driver now, whereas you C4 probably is.

This is a great attitude and perspective. Each does have something the others don't. There is no reason to bash or ridicule another generation car.
I hope you find your trade, and I wish you good luck.
Sounds more like the "Hatfields" & "McCoys". With all the other [relatively] important issues in 'life', Corvette series preference should NOT be one of them.....
