A couple years ago I bought a repro takn from Eckler's after removing my rusty original.
The body-on resto has progressed slowly, but I'm now trying to install the new tank. I double-checked that I have the correct tank, but it doesn't seem to sit on the cross-rail properly. Unfortunately, I don't have the original to compare so I have a question. The rear corners of the tank are bent down which prevents the tank rear flange from sitting on the cross rail. Because the tank doesn't sit squarely, the straps are impossible to attach. One solution seems to be bending the corners flat, but they must have been bent by the manufacturer for some reason.
Does anyone know the correct method to seat the tank on the rear cross rail? Car is a 72 LT1.
Thanks a bunch for the pix. I took the tank out this AM and will start over - a bit smarter. My memory isn't as good as it once was. I'll probably have more dumb questions as I procees with re-assembly.
I just replaced my tank this summer and had the same problem. I thought I had the tank in the correct height, but it was not up all of the way and the exhisting straps would not hook up. I pushed a little harder and it seated up in the correct location. Try jiggling and pushing it a bit harder. It will fit.
