You have to check with your local DMV, but most DMVs these days only search back 10 years, if that much. Plus most government agencies are very concerned with giving out documents with personal info on them. Much tougher task than it used to be.
I would suggest trying to research previous owners through old receipts, etc, by Google and other online methods, then possibly "backing into" paperwork by asking them nicely if they still have stuff laying around.
