I saw a 68 vert yesterday and the exhaust exited the back under the body -- there were no notches in the body panels. I asked the owner if it used to have side exhaust and he said no. Is he wrong (he isn't the original owner) or were some of the 68s made without the notched panels for the exhaust?
side exhaust was not a 68 option. It was an option in 67 and then they came out with a different style side exhaust as an option in 69. Since it was not an option in 68 I seriously doubt there were any original 68's without the cutouts for rear exhaust.
Maybe a previous owner replaced the panels with the intention of adding side exhaust but never got around to it. Why else would you eliminate these notches? I was surprised that the owner (who says he's had it for 15 years) isn't aware that this isn't a "stock" appearance.
My thought would be that at one time someone put some type of side exhaust on the 68. When it came time to sell the car the side exhaust came off ( because of rust?, to be sold?) and a quickie exhaust system went on without spending the money on opening the cut-outs, and buying the bezels and extensions.

Alan
The exhaust exited through the rear valance panel on all 68s. As Alan said, the car probably had side exhaust on it at some point.
Don't be surprised that the owner doesn't know what is or was original to his car, many owners don't!!!!! He also may know it's not correct and is just hoping you believe him.
