There is a combination of 3 letters on the engine stamping pad that will give you the engine/carburetor/transmission combination for that build. It will be the last 3 letters on the second stamp. For example, if the 2nd stamp is V0208CKX (Flint MI, February 8th, Base Engine 350/200, Rochester Quadrajet Carb, Turbo Hydramatic 400 Automatic Transmission)
...There is nothing in the VIN that indicates the transmission...
SS164 It's a major PITA to convert AT cars to 4 speeds and vice versa. What have you found? Do you suspect a tranny swap has been made?
A VIN derivitive is stamped on all C3 transmissions. The location of the stamp on the tranny can vary from year to year so it's best to check the assembly instruction manual for the location. If the VIN derivitive matches your VIN, the tranny is probably original.

as well that it's not in the VIN. I was just giving a place where you can match up your serial number to the VIN and then also have a code that does tell what transmission came in the car. The engine block tells both of them.
