Default 1968 427?

Did 1968 Corvettes have a 427 with an automatic transmission? I just bought another 1968 Vette and it's an auto but I'm not sure what size the motor is. I think it's a 327, how can one easily tell the diffference?

Default 1968 427 w/ automatic

Yes in 1968 the m40 was $226.00 when combined with a 427 engine. 5,063 automatics were made in 1968.

I'm sorry but how did you come up with a value on this purchase if you didn't know what engine was in it?

Check this link, it gives all sorts of info on the 68.

The M40, ie T400 automatic
was only available in 1968 with a hydraulic cam, not with the performance solid lifter engine. It did however become available in 1969 with the 435`s

Default Impulse purchase

I know I know, why would you buy it without knowing right? Well here's the deal. I found it on Craigs List the other day http://mobile.craigslist.org/cto/1363269150.html and I really only wanted it for the body because I'm working on my first 68 that someone had put a 74 or 76 body on and I really wanted to bring it back to what it's supposed to be. Anyway, The guy had it listed as having a 350 which I knew was not original because they only have a 327 or a 427 for that year. I went and looked at this Vette that was for sale and the guy was selling it for his girlfriend whose husband owned it but died 5 years ago blah blah blah. So it's been sitting outside not being used for a few years. I'm new to this whole old corvette thing and I looked at the engine and knew it wasn't a 350 but really wasn't sure what it was because I couldn't see the engine code on the front right side. I did pull GM 3914678 from the left rear side of the engine which I'm now pretty sure means it's a 327 so it could be the original engine and it has a factory automatic. In the end I paid $3500 for it and I'm thinking at this point it may be the original engine and transmission. I was thinking he was listing it by HP instead of CI. I won't really be getting into the car until November or December so I will find out for sure then.

That block casting number is correct for a 68 327.

The link I posted doesn't show a 327/350hp automatic as an option but to be sure I'll have to get my blackbook back from my brother and check.

For $3500 even if it is the base motor with an auto transmission I think you did alright.
Don't throw anything away until you have done your research. There are many parts on the 68 that are not repo'd and even if they are they usually aren't correct

That looks like it has the correct grills with the silver edges (most have been replaced with black repos)

Default Engine paint

Do you know if those engines came from the factory painted orange? I took some pics of the engine when I went and looked at it that I'm gonna try to post on here by Monday.

Yes, they were painted orange along with the intake and valve covers on the 300hp motor. The 350hp had chrome valve covers.

Not the best picture but here is a 300hp 327 the block was painted orange too, not that you can see that here.

Hey, cut the guy a little slack. We all started out with 'zero' knowledge. He just found a decent car without knowing what he had. Most of the rest of us did exactly the opposite with our first one. Obviously, we don't know what condition the car is in, but it sounds like you have something to start with. You did get the title for it, didn't you?

Post like this do not have a place on the forum. I have a 68 and to be honest with you I have been mislead by several so called experts. I have ordered parts from some of the most respected dealers and had to return them because all 69-72 are not only incorrect they just flat out don't work. Furthermore, I have not found a book that outlines all the irregularities of a 68. When I see a member taking on a project like this I have the desire to be as helpful as possible. For two reasons first he is a corvette guy and second he is probably going to learn something in this project that we do not know. Hopefully, when we ask the question he will be respectful with his answer and not belittle us for asking.
