I have been checking craiglist for about a general 500 mile radius of my area, mine is in better shape compared to cars that have asking prices of 9-10k for the most part.

Asking price and selling price are two different things. Thats why ebay is useful because you can see how much people are actually willing to pay.

Not really though, because reserve's are rarely met and deals are often made outside of e-bay on cars.

at the end of the day, its what you like thats important!!! if you plan on keeping her, it doesnt matter what she is worth, its whats its worth to you that is most important. It is not a high value collector vette. so do as you please and enjoy her.

if you want to add side pipes or re paint, that is entirely up to you, and you should not be influenced by any one else either way.

thats my opinion, for what it's worth!!

Even when the reserve is not met, you can see what the highest offer (bid) was. That is certainly a better representation of what a car is worth on the open market than looking at asking prices on craigs list.

I'd say 8-10K as is. It's a nice vette, but not the most desirable year, Vega steering wheel as stated, low HP engine, the color & auto trans.
You can make that engine bay a 100 times better looking with a few weekends of cleaning, striping paint & repainting. That will add to value just by the visual aspect alone, make you proud to open the hood and when you decide to rebuild the engine then finish detailing the rest of the engine bay.
Just my 2c.

you are correct

ask liquiddragon what it's worth (no offense)

brown is the worst color on a vette for resale

you guys saying 8-12k need to come back to earth!

I have kids who like to ride in my fun-ride. I would not be interested in a car with side pipes. I know there are a lot of people who like them, but there are also a lot of people who won't own a car that has them. If you are adding the pipes for re-sale reasons, I doubt it would increase the value sufficiently to cover the cost of the pipes. Just something to think about.

Kids, and probably my wife for that matter, would not pay attention when getting in and out of the car. The result would be burned legs and bad feelings toward me and the car.

Not really true. You don't really find out what the highest offer was... if I bid $10K but it was UNDER reserve, the only bid that will show on the history is the proxy bid that was necessary. What that means is, if the next highest bid was $5k, my bid will only show up to the next highest increment, probably something like $5100. I could have bid $10k and you would have no idea what my high bid was, as long as it was under reserve.

The fact is that they are just bolt on parts that can easily be removed and put back to stock as long as you keep the original manifolds.

You can answer too, Mike
I'm not picking on sidepipes. As Mike said, the value is in the originality. It's true that there are people on the forum who like the pipes, but it is just as true that people on the forum know better than to pay for something that has no value, or even worse, causes less value because of what it would take to take them off.

A smart buyer who likes Hooker sidepipes would use this to his advantage, not foolishly pay extra for it.

Worth $10K as it sits. Insure it for $15K with a collector car insurance policy (or whatever value the company allows between $13-15K). Clean up the engine compartment, but leave it completely stock...except for sidepipes [if you must]. But keep the stock exhaust manifolds and all of the hardware plus how it all goes back together. The next owner will want the original stuff.

P.S. Take lots of digital photos as you are taking the engine out and disassembling stuff out of the engine compartment (proper routing of hoses and wires, etc.). Also, rebuild all of the accessories in the engine area...don't replace them with aftermarket rebuilds. It's a lot less expensive to rebuild them yourself (get alt. 'guts' at NAPA, P/S rebuild parts at Corvette supply places, etc.) and you have the original date coded housings already!

I didn't think you where picking on them, it's just that I don't see them as devaluing the car as they are just bolt-on parts. It's not like it's an L71 with flares

If I were to sell my 68 it would be without the Hookers which would then be sold separately to that smart buyer, if he wanted them or he can buy new ones.

It looks pretty original. I'd clean it up and get it judged as a survivor. That will add value if and when you decided to sell it in the future. The originality of your 'vette adds value but the condition detracts.
