Default Convertible Channel Caulk?

I'm getting ready for her to come back from the bodyshop and one of the first jobs will be to put the windshield trim back on. When I took the upper windshield convertible windshield trim off I recall some white caulk-like stuff in the channel. Anyone know what this stuff is for and do I need to replace it? If so, where do I get some?

I found some White Chalk some time ago, at a hardware store,
it is about 1/8" diamater sorta like string, you unroll as much as you need.
This worked really well for installing the windshield trim, on my 69.

Hi DJ,
I found that white chalky caulk on my 71 too.
I couldn't locate what 69V mentions, so I used the black 3M Strip Caulk that many people call dumdum, in it's place
Regards,
Alan

thanks Alan. do you know or guess the purpose of the caulk? it almost fills the channel and is under the top windshield conv header trim. the trim is held in place with screws so i cant figure out why they put it in the channel. any help would be appreciated

It actually has a GM part number listed in the AIM. No help from the deal. I had zero luck getting the "right" stuff at Carlisle. Everyone said people just use something else.

Hi DJ,
I really don't know just what Chevrolet was thinking with the caulk.
I'm sure they knew they had leakage problems, but I wouldn't think they were thinking about rust just yet. So my bet is the caulk was there to divert any water away from screw holes or bolts so the water couldn't find its way into the interior.
When I looked at what was under there as I took it apart, all the sealer, caulk and foam strips seemed pretty haphazardly placed.
I just loaded up the windshield header and cross bar (on my coupe) with the 3M strip caulk.
Regards,
Alan
