Default 1969 Stingray VIN Number has 'G' not 'S'

Any idea why my 1969 Stingray VIN number has a 'G' where the 'S' (St. Louis) letter should be ?

Not your fault, but the is decoder is '69s were built only in St. Louis.

->OP, you may have a bogus tag, please post a picture.

I recently saw a '69 L-71 convertible at the Live Stock Exhibit center car corral at the Hot August Nites car event this year that had a debossed VIN metal tag in the winshield pillar post location. There definitely was something a miss with that set-up. I pointed out the obvious descrepancy to the owner/seller. He had no clue as to what I was referring to.

Here it is. Its pretty evident that it has been on the car since 1969. I left the last 2 digits out of the picture on purpose. Interesting that it starts with 1 and not 7. And yes, the windshield frame is pretty bad. I was just about to replace it.

That picture is very out of focus. I don't see the '19' at the beginning of the VIN, on top of the other two problems mentioned.

According to that tag 45000+ Corvettes were built in 69.
Tag from another GM car line?

Alan

Since the 'G' means it was made in Farmingham, MA, maybe it was a prototype ?

If you the car is already torn apart, then you can confirm the VIN by checking it on the frame.

Hi H UP,
From the look of that windshield post there might not be enough of the frame left to read the stamping!

a 19437 is a corvette coupe, the 9 means 69, the G means farmington mass, where they made chevelles, the 1 after that is just a place holder I think, the next digits as stated in a previous post, is the sequence #. it is the 45,1XXth car to be built..... not that many vettes built... this looks like an invalid VIN... I am now curious how this pans out!
