Throttle body injection system. Heck with all of the Cross-Fire TBI systems that folks have pitched, you could have had one of them for "peanuts". If the intake system is all that you want to change, that's the way to go...
P.S. That is a nice, simple system for an otherwise 'stock' C3 engine.
The throttle body injector has no advantage over a carburetor. The ECU connected to it, on the other hand, does wonders for fuel management, performance and economy.
From what I saw, your performance won't be much more than a carb properly set up. The advantage is consistant performance no matter where you drive the car and better gas mileage. The ECU automatically adjusts to your driving habbits and the initial set up is very easy. Just type in some engine parameters and ECU sets itself to get you running and makes changes as you drive.
As far as peak HP and torque a properly set up carb and FI system will provide very close numbers. There is no way a carb can do wha telectronic FI can do. A carb is an average fuel dumper, fuel injectio nis precise fuel dumper. The driveability of FI over a carb is no coparison. I run a lumpy cam and it would take a while to get warm and stumble and cough until it got warm. Even warm it was not good until the upper rpm. I set it up with a LM1 sensor and the AF ratio was dead on, it just can't perform liek FI. I put on port FI this winter and can start it right up and drive it. When warm it is smooth as can be. Even a throttle body is better than a carb. It is calculating many times a second wha tthe engine needs, a carb just cannot do that.
Sure....if I didn't want my car to be completely stock and had an extra $2K that I didn't want to use to buy gas! Looks like a nice set-up that would not change the under-hood [and under-air cleaner] appearance too much.
I'll reiterate that the throttle body itself has no ability to regulate fuel. The carb can regulate fuel in [and of] itself...no assistance required. It is a "smart" component. The throttle body will just sit on the top of the engine and do nothing...unless it is connected to a properly programmed ECU--which does all the real work. A good carburetor is a much more sophisticated device than a 'dumb' throttle body. Let's just place the "importance" of a device where it belongs: the ECU and its programming.
My only comment on FI is that if done cheep, like 15 years ago I spent 750 bux total on my '72, to put in a TPI setup, now that would still be there today, IF I wasn't a hotrodder, and went on to a large runner/base/tbody setup on a roller engine....then on to the LT1 induction on the same engine...but the changes were for ME, not any fault with the setup....
so having said that, I still to this day don't have 2 grand in the entire FI over some 15 years now.....
I have a tough time justifying 2 grand for a FI setup of any type, stock parts are just tooo cheep in the yards/shows.....
and besides, doing your own work, you maybe even learn something, but if you have no curiosity, well what can I say???
