I tried the 255/60R15 and they rubbed the fender well on the frt. in tight turns, I think they called it bump steering, and the factory said some mods. might be required to trim fenders. I'm sure there are guys on this forum who can tell you ins and outs. I run P-235/70R15 BF Goodrich, I did buy a rally wheel for the spare, but I've been thinking about a 195/70 R15 for it. I still have the org. donut spare in it now, which would probably blow out from age, LOL Waiting to hear from you guys on this. Have a great day. Gene

Do you have a photo - side view - so I can see how those 235/70R15's fill the wheelwells?
I had to carry the spare in the frt. seat to the nearest place. I know there are guys on this forum that have worked this out. Come on guys, tell this guy the size tires he needs. Have a wonderful day helping out. Thanks. Gene
225/70/15 & 255/60/15 which was a later option are correct dia. for speedo.
The major changes for 1978 included a larger gas tank & therefore less space for the spare.
I also have the 255/60/15 size tires on a 1980 and found that
205/75/15 is the same diameter and fits on the 6 inch donut
spare wheel and easily in the spare tire carrier.
Walmart stocks a Goodyear tire, which is still US made in this size
for about $60.
The 255's are a little more than an inch wider than the 225's. Your carrier should adjust enough to absorb that difference. The stock tire for '77 was a G70-15 which converts to a 225 width. It's about a toss-up that 255's will fit on the front without rubbing. 235R60-15's are a good alternative...or even 245's. Good luck with your choice.

Everybody keeps talking about a donut spare wheel....where can I find one?
