Default Calling all 1979 Owners

No big problem, just curious. I am trying to determine if the original FACTORY keys for a '79 are coated with a black plastic cover on both the square head and oval head key. I bought my car from the original owner and he provided me with two sets of keys. Both sets have the black covers on them and are embossed with the GM logo. The reason behind the question is that I recently had my glove box lock sent off for repair because I could not lock it. The gentleman who was to repair it called and said the lock is fine, all I needed was a key without the plastic cover. He provided me with two and now I can lock works fine.
Any thoughts? Thanks

Factory keys did not have covers.
You can buy them aftermarket.
I have slipon covers in different colors for each of my Vettes to keep them sorted out.

I DID have an 88 Z24 Cavalier with factory keys with the rubber covers, but that was 1988.

No, just plain Jane metal keys with GM stamped on them....The letter A and "Mark Of Exellence" under the "GM"

Thanks to all that have chimed in. Apparently I do not have the original keys, unless the previous owner added the covers to the keys. Thanks again to all who replied.

No plastic !!!! just plain old ugly key. I have another question !!!!

Is the trim around your rear window black or chrome. I've seen both but don't know which is correct. My black L82 trim was painted black but I have seen chrome on black vets. Any guesses?

All 79s are originally black trim.
78s are black AND bare stainless(two tone) except the Pace Car which is black like the 79s.
But there was also a run of 78s that were all stainless, VINS 5000 to 11000 or so.

I bought my 1st '79 in '83. No black trim.
I bought my 2nd '79 about 7years ago. No black trim.
Maybe the Canadian versions had no black trim?

I agree with KapsSA. All '79's are supposed to be semi-gloss black. I bought my '79 from the original owner and mine are black, however there is some wear showing on some of the trim. Maybe someday I'll remove it and respray it. Ha ha!!!

I thought this was a party thread for 79 owners....

no rubber thingees on my keys....

my trim is stainless/chrome .... looks original (removed rear bubble trim when painted and no indication it used to be black)? You sure ALL 79's were black trim????

Here is more info on the window trim. The 1979 Corvette sales brochure shows a yellow car with black window trim, front and rear.An article in a magazine called Corvette News from Oct/Nov 1978 shows four views of a red Corvette with all window trim being black. The NCRS judging manual calls for the trim to be black. Finally, I have a copy of the Chevrolet 1979 Corvette Specifications Manual which shows that the front and back window moldings are "black-finished". I hope this helps.

I agree, all research I have done shows the window trim on 79's to be black.
