Default Fall Winter projects thread

Binnie77 post on his project got me thinking about what I have to do this winter. I have to finish up a body on resto for another forum members 77 car. We already installed a new crate motor and 5 speed. Completly reworked both front and rear suspension with some Vb stuff. He shipped the car down to me to finish the Dewitts install, hydroboost, Steeroids, brakes etc. and all the new wiring plus the dash and about a million other small details. Finally fire it up and make sure it is all roadworthy. That should be enough, but noooo! I am going to yank the motor and trans in my car and put in a solid roller cam and just go through the motor. Also have some better shifter lugs for my Tremec trans. I also bought a set of double offset trailing arms for mine. Then I have another forum members car that he has a dual mount spring to install and a set of double offset trailing arms also. This should keep me busy for the fall/winter months.

What is everyone else doing.

Nothing on the car. Too damm cold in the garage. Helll that's no excuse, I haven't done anything on the car since I got it running right about 2 years ago.

Getting my snow blower ready for global warming though.

This winter I may try rebuilding my turbo 350 trans. Never rebuilt a trans before but I'm reading up on it now. First I am going to take some pressure readings from the trans and see what the readings are. If they are out of whack I will do the rebuild. Trans feels like it is slipping during 1/2 to 3/4 throttle upshifts, taking way too long to get into next gear. I will put the tougher sprag gear in it, extra clutch plates and a shift kit while I have it apart. Wish I could just buy a reman 200r4 but I have to watch the cash. Have alot of time and not alot of cash right now.

Gordonm,
You might be sorry you asked,
I am in FL and that means winter doesn't slow me down in fact the cooler weather is great for me I don't do well in heat,
Bats don't like direct sunlight,

I have too much yard art,
While I am big into early kit cars Vettes are my real love,
My goal for the new year is to only have the Mako vette project and my vw trike,

I don't want to jinx it but I believe I found my Mako project donor,
No engine, so that means scoring a BB and I am guessing a 502 this time.
Mike will pull molds off my mako parts so I have extras to fall back on and don't ruin the original parts for my build,

Off topic of vettes but on the whole project thing, I am hoping before new years to have this thing , my red stink bug all wired up and running so I can get it out there and get it sold,

And I still have a mid engine 327 chassis and early GT40 body to get moving out...

So yes lots of activity in the Bats Cave

Rear wheel bearings and TA's on my Silver Ann.
On the Pace Car I'd like to do something to make a PO's black repaint look better, if possible without repainting. Someone did a pretty crappy job on the hood and front fenders. You can see the old spider cracks and sanding marks through the paint.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, maybe I'll finish the '41 pickup I've had since high school this winter.
Got plenty of time up here before the roads are cleaned up, unfortunately.

My fall/winter project consists of a 496 swap. The small block factory sidepipes will be replaced with Stahl headers and sidepipes. A Dewitts radiator and fans, along with an L88 hood is also on the list. If I can scrape up enough cash, I will also be adding a 5-speed.

I plan to replace body mounts this winter (groan....). I live in Minnesota but have a forced-air wood-burning furnace in a 28x48 garage with a 4-post lift, a stereo, and a well-stocked fridge.

AHHH heat. It sure is nice. I installed a small heater in my garage last winter. Sure makes it nice to work in. I like it about 60 to 65. Takes about 15 minutes to get up to temperature.

My projects for this winter...(...anyway I need to recover from my daily driver crash pocket and body disruptions first...)

1) Dump the 50lbs vacuum steel tube...arriving to around 2.700lbs weight.

2) Front/rear coilover suspensions.

3) Rack and pinion steering.

I don't have much to do to the Vette this year. I will spend quite a bit of time working on these.

I have a long list of knick knack kind of things that I have already started knocking out when the weather is bad on the weekends. It is supposed to rain tomorrow, and my son told me yesterday he wants to help me fix the door pull on the passenger's side, so that will be done before storage. I also only need to paint the Y-strap and I can install the spare tire stuff (jack and wrench are already in). Bunches of stuff like that. The only thing that I think will turn into a project is that I know I have a vacuum leak, and I can't get any air flow out of the dash vents anymore, so I get the feeling I am going to be taking a substantive amount of the dash apart to get at the HVAC box and figure out what has gone awry there. I never took the dash apart on any of my old cars that weren't VWs (and VW dash boards are remarkably simple), so I assume that will be an adventure to remember.

If you have a non-AC car, I think it was GD70 that very recently put together an excellent post with great pictures on how he changed his heater core from the engine side. If you do have AC, Paul74 has posted pictures and experiences on changing it from inside the car as well. Highly recommended viewing/reading!

Hopefully get a lot more done with my LS1/T56 swap. No garage makes for a very cold work day

Hi Gordon,
I've allready started many projects on my coupe but have a lot of while I'm at it projects. It's a body on project at this point in time.
Starting with,
Pulled the heater core and had the original rebuilt along with the radiator but have installed a nice Dewitt rad in it's place.
Replaced the interior firewall insulation
Pulled the evaporator & housing and cleaned out all the debris.
Pulled the exhaust manifolds and starter to clean & paint the block and pan. Getting ready to start putting everything back together today.
Will continue to prep & paint the frame back to the rear wheel kickup's then install the new sidepipes.
If I'm lucky I'll have the car to this point by the end of next week, but more like the first week of november. Sometime then I'll pull the steering assy off the car and rebuild then re-install, then continue on the assend of the car. Having a blast working on these cars.
