I bought my vette a couple months ago and purchased some original wheels/tires to replace the ricer rims/tires. When I removed the passenger rear wheel it was at least an inch higher all the way around on the inside tread. I thought the tire was just in that bad of shape but when I replaced it with the new one I noticed the top of the wheel still leaned in a little. Barley noticeable but I'm assuming that's what caused the wheel I pulled off to look like it did. My question is where should I begin looking for the cause of the trouble?

I agree. Sounds like the alignment cam may have slipped. You can check this by looking at the cams and comparing the two. They should be approximately the same in their adjustments.
A couple of things to check when you have the rear of car off the ground, grab the wheel and try to pull the whole thing to you. Have someone watch the yoke where it goes in the rear diff. It should have much play in it. You can also check the wheel bearings at the same time. Grab the wheel at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and the push and pull at the opposite sides. You should have very little play. Also do the same at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions. Again, very little play is expected.
i admit my curiosity is peaked as to what someone would do to a poor car
I sold the rims, I should have got a picture. I might be able to find some on the internet. Previous owner had a unique taste and didn't take care of the car. Left it out in the heat and rain.
