i need to re-seal my rear glass because it leaks. i painted my trim black a few months ago and its starting to chip here and there. im removing my t-top chrome trim as well and figured id do the same with the rear. i want to replace it with something simular to what modern cars run
or possibly run no trim at all?
does anyone have a pic of the trim removed?
im open to suggestions, what do you guys think?
im going for a clean look. nothing tacky. thats why im getting rid of the chrome. + i hate chrome ..
I don't know of any sources for flush mounted replacement glass for C3's. I can't image that there would much of a market for it.
If your painted stainless trim is chipping, then it most likely wasn't prepped properly for paint. Did you use an etching primer under the black? I have had excellent results refurbishing the black painted window trim on a number of C3's and F Bodies using Sherwin Williams or NAPA etching primer and SEM trim black. Some were done 10 years ago and still look great.
I too have the "blacked out" look on my 80. I won't risk tar-and-feathering to say that I don't like chrome, however!! My trim is starting to chip a bit, just as your is, and I think the best solution to this issue is powder coating. It's relatively inexpensive, and the finish is baked on so it won't come off. You can get a multitude of colors, so maybe even a paint-matched option is the way to go for you, who knows? Just find a reputable coater, and ask questions. Any business worth taking your stuff to will gladly go through the process and explain the process, pricing, and cost. I'm certain you will find it less frustrating than trying to custom engineer your own molding. A lot of the glass moldings (quarter glass) is encapsulated glass, meaning that the glass and molding are fused together at the factory...hard to replicate on a Corvette I would imagine. But whatever you decide, best of luck to you!
