It has some slotted, nylon guide pieces on either side that will grip the cover when it is new. Once it has some age on it, the nylon will shrink a bit, causing the cover to lose its grip. You can purchas new slides, or do what I did...wrapped the outer edges of the cover with some [black plastic] electrical tape. [Call me 'Bubba' if you must...but it works, it doesn't show, you can easily remove it, and it restores the operation of the cover to 'like-new' condition]. Just cut the width of the tape down so it doesn't show on the upper surface. If you actually use the ash tray, trim the tape on the under-side so the tape can't catch fire; if you don't use it, no one can see the under-side anyway.
The ash tray cover on my '76 keeps sliding down. Is there something I'm missing that holds it closed?
Mine scared the ****zille out of me when I first got the car One day hit the four barrell sounded like the dash board had a big crack it was only the ashtray door slaming open, I dont smoke so I fill the ashtray with wiping rags folded over, only comes open if I want now.
mine did this too. let me tell you the easiest and cheapest way to fix it. all you have to do is take apart so you have door in your hand. put a very slight bend in it. it will be so small you will never see it. then slide it back in clips until you get desired tightness.
The ash tray door has a clip on it that rides on the bottom of the shifter plate. It just clips on the bottom and rubs. Without this clip the doors fall.
Now, that is a new one on me. I've never seen one of those before and never noticed it in the A.I.M. I've owned a '68, '74 and this '71. The '74 was new, so I never had to open up the tunnel; the other two didn't have that clip [anymore]. My record for learning something new each time I link to CF is still intact!
if i remember correctly you just take the 4 screws out that hold top cover down then there are a couple screws under there to remove but to just put this clip on you may not have to remove ones underneath. then just push this clip on that WILLCOX is showing and add some grease so it slides easier. no springs. mine didnt have this clip anymore either.
There are tons of people that didn’t know about this clip! Trim Parts made the shifter plates a few years ago and when they did they left out the clips…. All the doors on the ash trays fell down. We sent them an original and now they make the clip too!
Remove the shift plate from the car and then just remove the screws that hold the chrome lower retainer in place. When you do this you can then remove the ash tray door and the slides to see the clip.

on my 77 the easiset fix was to use a coil spring on the cover on the passenger side from the front of the cover to the center console mounting bracket.....its really quite easy just take off the passenger side console cover and you can see where it gets hooked up maybe its the same on y0urs
