Default Help decoding 71 rear end numbers

Can anyone assit with decoding the following rear end code?

1 AB 8870 W

I have read in the restoration guide and have looked at a sample code for a 71 car

The 1 in front is not something I have read that should be there.

On a 70 car it indicates the shift that built the unit, but not sure that info was there for 71

On a 71 the AB is 3:70 and 70 cars used 3 letters

So it should be a 71 unit.

The 8 8 7 0 , I think this may may be 8 for August / 8 for the day of month or August 8th

and then 70 for year and W for assembly plant or possibly maker of the gear set.

Thanks David

Your stamping is a little off from what I see mostly, however you might have a early built '71 (low VIN). Here is what I usually see on '71's, both are from my cars.

1 AB W 067 E 1 or 1 AW W 061 E 1

The W is for the gear & axel plant in Warren, MI. The 1 at the end is for the day shift vs 2 which is for night shift. The 067 or 061 is a Julian date, it stands for the sixty-seventh or sixty-first day of calendar year 1971.

Thanks Early Shark

Is the 1st # 1 the year model indicator?

Not sure why the rest of the numbers are not in line with the norm.

Thanks
