Hi all,
I recently installed my dual Spal fans and my DeWitts and have determined that my temp gauge is off considerably. The fans turn on at 190 and off at 180 but my temp gauge reads about 210. I'd like to replace the sender but the current sender seems larger than it needs to be. Can I substitute a general sender from Summit meant for a small block? I've got a ZZ4 crate motor.
Hi Roger, I just moved my thermostatic switch for my electric fans to that location because as sent from DeWitts the switch doesn't seem to work correctly in the radiator. I think that precludes me from adding another sensor in the thermostat housing.
I'm not an expert on this but I believe the temp sender on our cars is different and has to be the correct type to work correctly with the gage, a general use one from Summit may not work correctly. I bought mine from Lectric Limited made specifically for my car and it works perfectly. I had to install mine in the intake when I changed heads so you can move it around, you can also install a reducing bushing in the intake if the sender is too large for the hole.

Yes I have run into this more than once...it needs tp be the proper resistance in order to read properly on the stock gauge the sender for your year should be used

Thanks guys, i bet that's my problem right there. It reads incorrect but it's consistent (210-215) so I would bet someone put the wrong one in there. I noticed on corvette central the correct one has a tang on the end and mine very defintiely does not...
I spoke to Willox today and they told me that there are no reliable temperature sending units out there for my '74. Is anyone using on ethey think is reliable?
resistor is an interesting idea... i'll check and see what's in there. i've got a ZZ4 crate with L-98's so I don't think the stock sensor will fit in the head anyway.
I'm not sure if our correct style sending unit will fit in your ZZ4, it has 1/2" npt. Here is a picture of one and link. Also the radiator has to be grounded in order for the switch to work correctly in the radiator. We supply a ground strap now with all our rad/fan combos.

I have a ZZ4 with a Weiand intake, my sender is in the intake near the gooseneck and it reads properly. Came from Lectric Limited, it has a little different sensor than the one pictured. It reads exactly the same as the one that was in the original L-48 motor; I've had them both in the ZZ4.
