Default C2 (1972) dash speakers. What depth?

Replacing my speakers, pulled the metal fram thing out to match hole pattern. However, I'm not sure how deep I can go...2" what is the max? Seems there are some good speakers out there that are between 2 and 2.5". I have A/C which I've read limits them for some reason but not sure why. Do these have to special speakers?

I bought a couple of speakers from Crutchfield they fit fine. Unfortunately, they are nothing compared to the speakers in enclosures I put behind the seat. If there was a way to put enclosures around the dash speakers I'm sure they would be better, but there is not room.

The speakers in the dash only need to carry high frequencies; you really don't want them to do the low frequency work. Highs will reflect off of glass and be directed right at the listener...just what you want. Lows in the dash would just muddy the sound and probably rattle or vibrate and create resonances. So you can just buy some inexpensive mid-range/tweeters for the dash and save the big bucks for the speakers you put in the kickpanels or in back. Without the need for producing low frequencies, the dash speakers don't need big magnets or much depth.
