Default windshield trim help

I was replacing the seal around the windshield, the clips holding the trim were rusted. can you install new clips with out removing the windshield, they were screwed into the frame.

Doesn't the glass have to come out to replace the seal?
I belive the glass has to come out first.

Hi John,
I agree with HD that the windshield needs to be out to REPLACE the seal. About the only thing you can do with the glass in place is add more sealer to the squeeze-out that's already there.
It's VERY difficult to get the clips off with the windshield in place. You need to be VERY careful that you don't nick the edge of the glass with the shaft of the screwdriver. That nick may cause a crack immediately or in the future. This has happened to many people.
Be careful!
Regards,
Alan

Hint................

See what Mike is doing in the top left corner of this pic?
BTW....he's swinging a hammer with the other arm

that is NOT the correct way to get to the screws for those corner pieces or the screws for the clips that hold the stainless windshield trim on

my windshield was being replaced so damage to it was not a concern

Hi John,
The seal between the glass and windshield frame needs to be cut. Many people use a piece of music wire as a blade. With one person inside the car and one person outside, they move the wire in a sawing motion around the perimeter. You need to be very careful and quite lucky because depending on if the windshield has been replaced it may be very brittle from age.
There HAVE been threads about this job... you might find them with a 'search'.
Regards,
Alan

PS: There are instructions in the CHASSIS SERVICE MANUAL for your car, if you have it.

How many clips are there that are holding the trim in place? When I took my windshield out, there were only a few clips and they were held in place by the gasket. I don't have any holes in the upper windshield frame and need to put new clips on. Any suggestions or illustrations for this? Thanks

Hi T,
Look back at posts by BenUK. I believe he had a thread about his car's windshield header trim and the clip situation. It was a few weeks ago...I think.
It may have the answers you're looking for.

Alan

Why couldn't the clips be riveted in, the holes can be accessed from other side.
