Has any one ever attempeted to remove the map pockets and add or modify a glove box in it's place in early C3 cars? Sorry Purists...
I am not sure how much space there is behind the pockets but I would think a shallow golve box could be created and installed.

What are your thoughts?
Seems to me that first, the space that you would be able to add would be very limited, second, it would probably look very "Bubba-ish", and third, it would be a tremendous amount of work for seemingly very little gain.
Why do you want to do it anyway? It's not like you're going to be able to fit your golf clubs in there.

True, and it would have to look professional because the Bubba Look is not what I apspire for... but I am not even comfortable keeping the insurance and owers card in these pockets, so it would not have to be deep, just enough to keep the necessary stuff in.
Hi MV,
Have you thought about keeping those papers in the lockable center compartment behind the seats. I bet that's what Chevrolet intended. In not as though you need easy access to them, hopefully you'll NEVER need them.
Regards,
Alan

Why don't you use the rear compartments for that stuff? There's plenty of room and my original '69 has the lock and light on the middle one which is perfect for the paperwork. The passenger side compartment can easily be expanded if you take out the tray and stow the jack somewhere else (like up under the rear fender with a bunge cord). You could clean it up, paint it, maybe line it with some vinyl and put a bunch of stuff in there.
I'd avoid cutting up the dash at all costs, but I am more of a purest...
As another purist, I agree it would be a pretty awful idea, both from an aesthetic viewpoint as well as trying to explain it when the car was for sale. Especially when the center compartment was made for such things as car-related documents.
However, if you insisted on doing such a thing, I would imagine the best way to go about it would be to simply remove the map pocket side of the dash, and replace it with a cut-out section of the RH side of a donor 78-82 dash, complete with glove box.
I would imagine some careful attention to detail might reduce the Bubba factor. A little.
