Can someone tell me how hard it is to modify the area where the radio goes to install a newer style radio. I'm tired of buying the dual shaft radios that sound like crap. This is on a 76 and I'm not worried about it not looking original, but would like a better system.
You can cut out the bezel to fit the din style radio and get one of these to dress it up. It's a plastic insert that you either cut to fit the din style or use it for a **** style.
I am planning on keeping my original radio in place and install a modern Kenwood CD/Radio with a wireless remote in one of the rear storage compartments.
I will be able to control the player with the remote by using an infrared repeater. All that will be visible will be the small "eye" from the repeater.
The total cost was $79 for the CD player on sale at Best Buy and $35 for the IR repeater. Much less $ than the cheap Custom Autosound or vintage shaft mount units.
I like the idea of keeping the stock looking dash and radio..
If you dont want to cut up your original bezel, the repops with the single DIN radio opening are around $100
