Fibre Optics-How do I install ?
What is the order in which the ferrule, glass strand, lens and cover installed, what is used to crimp the ferrule?
Lets start with a tail light, in whick order would I start, what goes where?
I've checked my copy of the AIM, perhaps I'am missing it!
Another question, why is there a coloured lens at the light source, when the display at the console is coloured as well?
Thanks for your help!
Are you saying that the 'lamp moniter' connectors aren't complete on the lighting harnesses you bought? That surprises me since the harnesses I've seen are ready to install.
Do you just have the filiments with no end on them at all locations?
Regards,
Alan
The replacement harness I have terminate at the tail light end with the brass ferrule not crimped, the cable has the ends raw, with just the ferrule and cover slipped over, not installed.
The monitor end is the same, the harness is by Eagle, I picked it up at Corvettes @ Carsile.
I just need to know how it all fits together, and in which sequence?
Craig
I looked at a tail-light on my 71.
There's a gray rubber gasket fits into the tail-light housing.
On the F.O. cable there's a small black rubber cover on the cable, then the ferrule is crimped on the end of the fiber-optic strand. About 1/16" of the strand sticks out beyond the end of the ferrule. The ferrule has a little 'stop' on it, it's at the end of the ferrule near the black rubber cover. Then there's a tiny red plastic lens, in the shape of a thimble (sized for a tiny ,skinny finger) that slides on the ferrule up to the 'stop', and the whole thing goes into the gray rubber gasket on the housing and the black rubber cover seals on the gray rubber gasket.
In the 71 AIM UPC 12, Sheet C6, the drawing shows the end of the F.O. cable just as it's ready to go into the tail light housing. It's labeled "lamp monitor". The drawing shows the cable, the black rubber cover and the end of the red plastic 'thimble'. You can also see the gray rubber gasket on the tail-light housing.
At the interior console the F.O. strand just has a ferrule on it's end and inserts into the F.O. lens that mounts on the shifter trim plate. UPC 12, Sheet C5.
I hope this helps a bit!

Alan

Thats what I needed to know!
I'll be taking on this job next week, installing a complete harness inside the car, along with a few other projects I've been collecting parts for.
We have a foot of snow on the ground here now, almost no chance of one last drive remaining!
Thank you again Alan.

Good Luck!
We have a little bit of ice and freezing rain today but the snow from last Saturday is long gone. I keep an eye on a web-cam in Manistee Michigan where we vacation;and it looks like they had a bit of snow EVERY day this past week.... my wife would be happy but I wouldn't.

Alan
