I'm Javier, from Spain. I have a 1980 vette and since the last month, the car is not ok. After a couple of days without using the car, when i try to start it, i have to push the accelerator many times to get the car started. Well, it happens since I bought the car. But now, when the car starts, it's cold and it's hard running the engine. (I live in a very warm place). I have to push the accelerator strong to run the corvette. But yesterday the situation turning wrong. When i was runnning a moderate speed, the car began to lose power and finally it stopped. After 5 minutes i get to restart the car but when running another 200 meters lost the power and again it stopped. I had to call for help.
Anybody knows what happen with my car?
Thank you in advance
I'll go with a clogged exhaust/catalytic converter. take a look at the pipes under the car after running it...even during the day you should be able to tell if they look "hot".
This could be anything but start with the simple obvious things first.
1. Choke operation and not stuck.
2. Vacuum check for steady and strong vacuum.
3. Air induction check for air cleaner, flapper valve, no air intake restrictions, etc.
4. Fuel filter check.
5. Visual inspection of fuel, vacuum lines and overall the engine compartment.
6. Water in the gas.
7. Correct gas cap and evap system function.
8. Timing check & timing advance mechanisms o.k.
9. Carb floats operating correctly.
10. Fuel pump check by disconnecting the fuel line, cranking the vehicle without starting it and spark disconnected and measuring how fast it dispenses fuel into a container. The flow specifications are in the service manual. If you have water in your gas you should see it here.
If it's none of the above then you might have to dig deeper by doing a cylinder leak down test, checking the carburetor internally, distribution electronics, etc.
