Carfax will only work if your car has a 17 digit vin (which I believe started in 81). From what I understand, it is not 100% reliable. It may be a good starting point if your car qualifies, but certainly not a definitive resource.
That system just captures the warranty and repair work done on a [modern] vehicle. What do you think the odds are that a 40 year old vehicle has any warranty/repair data in a relatively new software system?

I don't even trust those on the C5 and C6's. They're only as good as the information that is loaded into the data base. Loads of examples of newer Vettes where the CarFax did not include any of the negative info in the car's history. Certainly not available on any of the early cars at all.
Will a carfax give me a good look at a C3 back to day 1, or is there a late start on vehicle history?
Seriously, I noticed in the For Sale section you are looking into a C3. Take everyone's advice here. Do your homework, and even more research before you buy. Unless you know what to look for, you're rolling the dice.
