Were all C3's considered Stingrays and Is there a specific C3 that was considered a MAKO or is that just another term used to describe the shark apperance. Appreciate as always the answer in advanced
The first Mako shark was actually made in 61. It had added features to look like shark gilles at the front side under the return of the bumper. It was also painted in whites and blues to look like the shark. The stingray name was originated with the 63-67 mid years and was in two words "sting ray" the early C3 was called stingray one word and believed it was dropped in 76.
Thanks old sarge, so the people that call them rays after 76 just using the lable really and there would be no actual value given to that lable or Mako to the collector market?
Thanks again for the reply
STINGRAY refers to the body design. 63-67 & 68-77. http://ganeys.home.sprynet.com/STINGRAY.htm
STINGRAY The new smaller body & chassis w/ I.R.S was introduced in 63. It applies to the 2 STINGRAY body styles 63-67 & 68-77.
Stingray- tail on 63-67 coupes, BB hood on 65-66, wings extended from roof 68-77 & Stingray pointed nose & wing fenders.
Since 63, for 15 years (63-77) Corvette & Sting Ray were synonymous.
While debatable on 78-82, many consider all C3 to be.
78- 25th anniversay of the Corvette- not Stingray. Many changes. They were already working on the C4 & McLellan had said the styling would be reeled in. 84 induction & 700R4 were in production in 81. So the focus was on the C4. CORVETTE says it all anyway.
Yeah generally Sting Ray C2, Stingray C3, some say the 76 cut off year for 'Stingray', but really...just because a car doesn't have a badge anymore, it is no longer a stingray even though it looks basically the same? seriously.
IMHO - if it didn't come from the factory with a badge that said "Stingray" - it's not a Stingray. My first corvette was a '77 and did not say "Stingray". It was just a Corvette (wow - did I say "Just" a Corvette ???!!!!!) and that how I referred to it...
Woman refers to the body design- no need to tatoo woman on the forehead. STINGRAY refers to the body design. 68 was unmarked.
If you can recognize them, they don't need to be marked for identification.
A CORVETTE doesn't need CHEVROLET emblems either.
Makes me feel old too when a kid asks me "Is that a Stingray mister?"
Then I get in, fire it up, take off at impressive speed....then I feel young again!
