Default sealant for small gap between windhield mldgs

putting a 70 back together and have a fairly good size gap between the top stainless windshield molding and the front edge ( at windshield ) of the Stainless "T" molding. Is there a proper ( silver/gray ) sealer to fill that gap. Ive seen some cars that the fit is tight and some that look sloppy with a gap ????

Thanks

I would use either the 3M caulking strips, or that stuff used to seal window frames. Can't remember what it's called.

IF you have a rust free frame, or one that is solid and well prepped/painted, the glass properly in place, and you are not all NCRS about things.....I suggest you find some REAL RTV at Lowes Depot, and fill the gaps completely enough to bed the stainless completely down, so much so you don't even NEED the retaining clips...use clamps with thin wood or tape to hold in place until cured....IF you fill the gaps correctly that stainless not coming out until cut out with a razor knife, then the frame will be intact....

seal the fenders with a similar treatment....

I have a '72 vert, and so it leaked over the top gasket, that stainless was the cause....wrapped it in vinyl....solution found from other cars over the years....works like a charm...

Hi FB,
There's been lots of discussion about the 'silver' sealer on the NCRS Forum.
On my 71 I used silver 'Scribbles' fabric paint. You can find it at your local crafts store. It comes in a small plastic bottle with a fine nozzle. You can squeeze it out in a fine bead. I did a bit of practice and then had good success.
Regards,
Alan

The color matches the chrome and ss better than it looks. The paint is metallic enough that it caught the flash in an odd way.

When I worked at a Cadillac dealer we used black or gray dum dum (3m caulk strips). Pushed it into place and then took a kerosene dampened cloth and wiped it back and forth until you got the line width you wanted. Easy, looked good and lasted.

3m Caulking strips for sure. The window stuff is gray and it is called butyl.

Hi Alan
thanks for the tip...I know your car doesn't go out in the rain, neither will this one but does that stuff hold up for washing and does it hold up after time ok ?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
It sets up quite hard and is durable and water proof. If I have some I need to wipe off while it's still soft or semi-soft I've been using acetone on t-shirt material.
As I said... play around with it a bit first to get use to how it acts. I ended up putting 2 layers on; the first to seal the gap, and then another small bead that I used my finger to smooth into the shape I wanted.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
