Has anyone seen this type of luggage rack? Is it a corvette rack? It came on my 1970 when I bought the car but doesn't look like any of the racks I have seen.
I guess you're aware that no Corvette came from the factory with a rack in '70, but this is not a dealer installed type either. Some short lived aftermarket piece?
Looks to me, to be a early chevy station wagon?????? What year??? somewhere in the early 60's Chevy II. The plus side (if there is one) you only have to fill the 4 holes, instead of 6 or 8, if you really want to have it gone / removed.
I must admit that I like the original (even if installed by dealer) look, but this is kind of interesting. Some previous owner needed a rack and found one that worked. It makes your car somewhat unique.
I would probably have taken it off when repainted, but since you didn't, what the heck, that's how a previous owner enjoyed and used the car.
I gotta say it's a Hell of alot better than some crazy fender flares and a huge disgusting blower emerging from the hood...
99 out of 100 people looking at your car wouldn't know the difference. And it looks fine as it is. Those that do recognize it is not an "original" [dealer installed] option will just start up a conversation. Nothing wrong with that.
GM had a recommended vendor for the racks, but the dealers were free to get them where ever they wanted. This one is less common than others.
Duer Tube Bending Co. in Bellwood Il, was the original vendor on the GM luggage racks and this rack sure looks like a Duer rack. I would have to look through pages and pages of old accessory catalogs to ID exactly what this rack came off of, but it just may be passenger car or grocery getter. Not sure.
Personally, I have a rack on my 72 and I kind of like it. Well some days I like it others I hate it (when cleaning). But the debate has always been to keep or take off and for many people the end result is what flavor you like.
I have some info on the original luggage racks on the web site. It needs to be updated again, but for the most part it should be correct.
