Default Help tracking down a vette in IL

Hi everyone, just signed on in hopes of tracking down my fathers old vette. I have all the pertinent information except the owners name. 31 yrs ago my father sold this car due to children/family obligiations...he's kicked himself for it ever since. He's set to retire this summer and I want to try and do the good son deed and give it back to him, assuming the current owner(s) would be willing to part with it. (I know they bought it in Nov. 2002, as that was when the current title was issued)

Basic info:

1972 Corvette
350ci Ontario Orange, Tan interior, manual, T-Tops
Registered in IL.(currently)
Car originally had the luggage rack on it

I have the VIN, current Lic plate and title number, however no name. If this sounds like someone you may know please help me out if you can.

Thanks in advance

Tom

You can try to get a local Police Officer to run the vin....

We have policy that will not let us do that in my Dept but someone may be able to were you live.

Just don't tell the people when you find the car how you obtained the info!!

Is anyone else having a hard time staying logged in?

There are some registry's that use the VIN,have you tried any ?
How did you get all this info and not have the owners name ?

You should be able to obtain the owner history from the IL DMV. I know...easier said than done.

Go to this site and see if the VIN shows up. Good luck.

What a great thing to do for your father! The best of luck to you, this is certainly a good place to start. You may want to even post the VIN. The registry may help too. If you find a match, the owner is probably also a CF Member.
Keep us posted, this is Fox news worthy!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the link Gary, car is not listed there. Still unsure about posting the VIN or info I have just for the sake putting it out there without even talking to the current owner. Sounds weird as I am trying to track it down, but I want to be respectful about it.

I put a feeler out to a local cop I know, I'll see if they respond to my message about tracking down the plate, should only take them a second but I'm not sure how legal that is and I don't want to get them in trouble either. I also am checking with the DMV. If I get the name/address I plan on sending a nice letter with my story and see what their thoughts are. I can certainly keep you guys up to date, and maybe have a great ending as well!

Yes sir, and it's getting very irritating but at least now I know it's not my computer.

Where in IL? Im in central IL if you want me to look at something.

Improper running of plates and VINs is one of the quickest ways for an LEO to need to find a new career. Don't ask twice if he's a friend.

IL Secretary of State isn't much help on title searches these days.

I'm in Northern IL, not sure exactly where the car is right now, but I know it is titled in IL. I asked a LEO friend pretty much knowing that they can't give me the information, but did ask for the town. Figure that should help me narrow the search a little. Merry Christmas everyone!

Well, no such help from the DMV or the LEO. I knew this search would hit a wall somewhere. Since the Lic. plates are pretty much public knowledge, I'll post that seeing as how its possible that the car could have been repainted/rebuilt....

IL Lic Plate : (edit removed)

If this number rings a bell, or better yet is your car please PM me with any information you may have.

edit:
May finally have a lead on a name!

Due to confidentiality laws, most DMVs cannot provide owner information unless the request comes from/through law enforcement officials.

You might consider investing a few dollars with a local private investigator. They have access to a lot of the same info as the local LEO and may be willing to help. Good luck with your search.

Update: Found it! Hard to believe after only 30 yrs, it hasn't traveled more than 100 miles. It's at the NW side of IL. Now to try and figure out a well versed letter to be addressed to the owners.
