Back in the 60s and 70s you could order color combinations that you wanted rather than being restricted to the interior color that comes standard with the exterior color like today's cars. The manufacturers did exercise some control over the combinations, however, to prevent green cars with red interiors or blue cars with green interiors (or yellow cars with red interiors). Paint it whatever color makes you happy, but the silver on red is really a nice combination and yellow on red will look like a circus wagon. Just my $.02.

Well, I'm not a fan of red or yellow, but that yellow C4 with red interior posted by FRSTR90 didn't look like an unreasonable combination.

I sorta cringed just a little at the idea of red interior with the yellow exterior. Just not a color combination that I could ever see myself with....ever. Bear in mind too, that if you ever HAD to sell the car (not like you are thinking of it or anything) you will have one helluva time unloading it with that color combo. Red and yellow do conjure up clown cars, Mickey D's, and a whole host of other not-so-pleasant images. As stated before, it's your car, and you have everyone's blessings in that respect....but IMHO, I wouldn't do it. Either pick a different exterior color to compliment the oxblood color, or spring for the new interior to match the color that you want. I guess you could always sell the complete interior to someone looking for a nice original setup, and then use the money to buy the one you want.....or dye it to match. Black is by far the easiest color to switch to, and SEM makes a great product that covers extremely well.

On a side note...I changed MY oxblood interior over to a flame red SEM color, and I have the silver exterior on my 1980....and I LOVE it. The color combo really pops. Shoot, in my photos, the red is REALLY eye-popping!

Good luck on whatever you decide to do!! Cheers, and Merry Christmas!

If you are set on yellow, then this is my favorite, it's 2000 corvette millenium yellow. As for interior color, I like the medium saddle that I have, the yellow/black combo was a little too dramatic for my taste. As others have said, paint it the color of your choice and if the interior clashes, it's time consuming, but not expensive to redye it to the color of your liking.

If you like Yellow then probably you also like Black...go with a Black exterior to match the interior

if the red interior is that good then i would go back to silver. if want to change the color then a nice pearl white would look better. plus if you had to sell it i think you would get more if it was silver or white

Default Final Choice?

Thanks everybody for your thoughtful responses.

I've got the silver paint pretty well striped off at this point. I am doing some odds and ends and a small fiberglass repair now. I should be blocking and priming in the next week or so.

I believe at this point I will go with the bright yellow. If I don't like it with the Dk-Red interior I'll just simply have to change the interior color to a saddle or a black color scheme next winter. I've been waiting for 38 years to buy this Corvette and I am not going to change my dream at this point. If I have to buy a new interior for a couple of thousand dollars-- so be it. It's like my son said (who is 3 months older than my 73 Corvette) "Will you be happier with a yellow Corvette or a silver Corvette in the driveway?"

The next big decision is; what color yellow? I'm going to have to do some homework and look at some cars this week. I may have to buy some small quantities of base and do a few test panels. At any rate, it's an interesting and fun journey that I am embarking on!

I would still like to see some more yellow Corvette pictures if possible. Please keep them coming.

I'll continue to post pictures as I progress.

Thanks again.. I find this Forum extremely helpful.

You know, I never even thought of it....but the yellow C3 that's in the upperleft hand corner of the Forum page...is yellow with black interior and red seats! It might be a way for you to get some red in there, and the black too. Just a thought, since I really dig the way that car looks. Again, just my 2 cents!

I say go with your dream. You can always change it to resale red to sell it and it will look great with the oxblood interior!

Back in the 70's there was an externinator here in South Jersey that was really into flashy things. Joey had a fleet of VW beetles, all with custom paint jobs and mag wheels. He had a pink chopper with about 10 foot long front forks, and was buying a new Vette every year or 2.

In 79 he bought a new 79, L-82, it was yellow with a red interior and the pace car spoiler package. I never found out if he ordered it that way (it was not an available color combination, but I was a fleet manager for a company back then, and GM did allow color combination overrides sometimes) or if he had it repainted. Either way, it was hard to miss. I must admit, I kind of liked it. I will say, on a 79 with that big back window and the T-tops off, that red interior really jumped out at you, especially against that yellow exterior. I wish I knew what became of that car.

I'd say, give it a try. If your not happy with it, later you can by seat covers and carpets in your choice of color and dye the rest of the interior (I don't recommend dying seats or carpets, though people have done it).

Good luck!

First of all you mentioned that the only one the car has to please is you. That is very true of any of our C3's. There is wonderous variety on this board. Some cars I like some cars I do not. If it was me I would not go yellow. But if you like yellow and red go for it. BTW changing the interior would be a very expensive propositon. I have spent a couple hundred dollars on mine just replacing a few minor parts that needed replaced. My vote is do whatever makes you happy.

I recently saw a Warbonnet Yellow car with a dark green interior, it was original but hidious! Just plain butt ugly! That being said, I say paint the car what you want to paint it! It's your car, your dream, and you've waited 38 years for it!
Perhaps a black Motion stripe would help the red/oxblood blend a bit better, no one's suggested that yet????

Sounds to me like you got some great advice from your son, and I am sure you have made the right decision. It's your car, and your dream. Best of luck with it!

Whatever works for you is the right thing to do but you asked so here goes. I like that Oxblood interior a lot and it looks like it is in great condition so keep it.

According to my Corvette Blackbook I cannot find any C3's that GM styling released yellow/red. Personally I wouldn't do it.

The colors GM released for ''73 with dark red interiors were: white, silver, dark blue, blue green, and red.

The exterior colors that GM styling released for the C3 run with red or dark red interiors are white, black, red, silver, gray, dark blue, blue green, tan, beige, mahogony metallic, charcoal, dark claret metallic,
