Putting together a painless harness and want need to know where the factory ran the original harness behind the speedo and center gauge cluster, need PICS PLEASE.
The wire harness goes above & over the speedo & tach. Get the AIM for your year. It shows this very clearly. Even some of the vendor catalogs show it.

Hi B1,
I'm surprised... many people have found the ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTION MANUAL (autoist) the biggest help in getting these 40 year old cars apart and BACK TOGETHER. I can understand why Glenn suggested it.

Alan
I'm not sure how painless these harness's are.. don't you have to either re-use the old connectors or get new ones? If your doing a resto rod this might be something that will be easier, but as far as the factory harness they are plug and play.
The only reason I asked this is that we had a customer in Indy that bought one of these then he spent a small fortune buying all the connectors he need.. His car when purchased, did not have a harness in it.
Hi Glenn,
Made me look!!!!
"Above and over" doesn't show untill 71!!!! There's a revision dated 7-9-70, on UPC12 Sheet B4.
Learned somthing new at this old age.
Regards,
Alan
Thank GD70 those pics are great, in my AIM there almost gone.
I bought a gm column keyed Painless harness, its not for a vette but with a few added curcuits and using my connectors it will work fine. Thats why I asked this question on the roughting, when I got the car the original harness was in a box
I've often wondered about this myself, as I have a lot of 68 partial harnesses and I'm too cheep to pony up approximately $1200.00 for all the repro Vette harnesses.
But I also don't want to burn my car down to the ground with 40 year old electrical wiring.
I'd be interested in your comments about your painless approach there, Tom!
Does the speedometer cabe go between the clutch and brake pedal or outside of the clutch. I have taken out my dash and struggled to disconnect the speedometer cable. It is currently outside of the clutch pedal and I was thinking about routing it between the pedals.
The pictures for the 1970 were great. I was looking at my 1969 AIM manual and it appears that there are 2 hooks that hang from the bottom of the speedometer and tack. That takes the harness under the speedometer and tach cables. This wire routing conflicts with the Windsield Wiper Door solenoid that also mounts at the bottom of the tach. It appears that I am going to struggle to get the tach and speedometer cable connected after mounting the dash. I got some play on the tach cable because I disconnected it from the distributor. The speedometer cable will probably be connected after I get the instrument panel back into the car from underneat the dash. This is a real pleasant job for a contortonist...
It looks like GM got smarter and moved the Wiper solenoid up higher on the tach for 1970 and possibly moved the whole harness above the tach and speedometer in later years.

Willcox
I just got a dash harness from Wilcox and it darn near fell into place, I was a little worried but it went in so easy I ordered a new heater and engine harness. If I were building a kit car or something I may go with a Painless harness but not in a production car.
I was attempting to re-install my dash for my 1969 as per the AIM, but after wrestling with the routing, I realize that either I am missing something or there is no human way to route the wire harness for the dash below the spedomenter and tach cable as per the drawing. The harness hits the back ot the light for the emergency brake light and the high beam light, in adddition to NOT having enough clearance between the back of the speedo and tach and the support for the steering column. If you were able to route the harness in this manner, you would not be able to put in the steering column because the harness would be directly behind the mounting place for the steering column. I am moving the harness back above the speedometer and tach...
Let us know how it worked out. Could that 69 assembly manual be wrong?I am stuck doing the same thing on my 69, my car has the extra cable and housing for the speed warning sticking out of the speedo housing, the wire loom is in direct conflict, also the vacuum wiper switch, some bulb connectors are all severely crunched. I tried to go on top of the gauges (wires not meant to twist that way) but then the rest of the harness turns out too short for the all the center console stuff. I still haven't put the panel on. Could some nice member look at his stock unmolested 69 and tell us how the harness crosses over behind the dash. Thanks.

I have a late (June, 1969) Corvette and maybe they changed the Instrument Panel (IP) or wiring, but there was no way for me to route the harness below the Tach and Speedometer cables like the AIM. I created a hanger (Short Piece of metal 1 1/2 Inch) I drilled a 5/16 hole for the bolt that is to the right at the top of the steering column support and a small hole for a Plastic tie wrap. I attempted to use several methods but the harness kept getting behind the tach while I was trying to get the IP installed. By extending the harness to the right and bending it down just pass the area for the tach, I was able to slide the IP in Place by myself without too much trouble.
The only way I could get the harness to work was to route it above the left steering support brace through the tie wrap that was above the Tach to keep it above the tach then bending the harness down right after the the area where the tachometer would be.
Since I had replaced many of the Instrument light sockets, I did not have any issues with the length of the cables for the IP lights. The Ground wires for the speedometer was too short, So I had to lengthen it. The ground for the tach, I just moved the ground connection from the bottom of the tach (that almost hits the steering column support) to the hole that was used for the J-hook attachment (The 3/8 cap screw) that was on the back side of tach near the rear bottom light socket hole.
The cables for the steering column were all connectable and worked well. I did have a little trouble getting the dash in with the Windshield wiper solenoid attached to the bottom of the tach so I removed it until after I installed the dash, then connected the electrical connections and reattached it to the bottom of the tach, then connected the vacuum hoses.
