Default Looking at a C3 Question

I was looking on the web at a C3 and found this statement in the ad... I am not familiar with the term "decked" what do they mean?

1968 Corvette Convertible, British Green (983) exterior with a Black (Std) interior and a Black soft top. Good driver quality paint with a good body and decent chrome. Under the hood is a correctly dated 327ci/ 350hp with a 4-speed manual transmission. We feel this is the original engine for the car but the front pad has been decked. Engine runs good with no problems and the transmission shifts as it should. The interior is in driver quality condtion with all correct gauges, door panels, dash, seats, etc... All the gauges work with no problems except the clock. This would be a good car for someone wanting a car they can do little things to over the winter, and have a nice summer driver. We can assist the buyer with fast and cost effective shipping. We encourage all possible buyers to come and look at the car.

The engine block has been decked or you could say cut down where the heads bolt on so in the process the nos. on the pad were cut off.

Decking a block is basically resurfacing the mating surfaces. The reason this is unfortunate is that when it is done they remove the serial number and build code on the front pad of the block, so you can no longer tell if the "numbers match".

In plain english...the motor has been rebuilt / reworked in the past at some point. When this rebuild / rework took place the...the Vin# and its suffix numbers stamped on the pad were removed by machining. So, this leaves you with a blank pad. It basically add's up to the fact that the block can no longer be I.D.' ed as the original motor supplied with the car from the factory when new. They are only original once! Hope this is clear.
